Madison County Economic Development Council
The Madison Marathon is the brainchild of the Madison County Economic Development Council (MCEDC), a 501 C 3 non-profit corporation. Aside from organizing a high altitude and totally cool marathon, the MCEDC has developed a number of other projects in Madison County. It was incorporated in 2004 and despite its youth, the MCEDC has several remarkable achievements to its credit. It successfully built the $10.5 million capital campaign to construct the new, 36,000 square foot Madison Valley Hospital & Clinic which opened in March 2009. It launched Montana Black, a local beef marketing program that provides local ranchers with an option to the commodity beef market while supplying Southwest Montana consumers with naturally raised Montana beef. It developed a $250,000 tourism business improvement district in West Yellowstone in cooperation with West Yellowstone Economic Development Inc. It raised over $60,000 for local nonprofits with a public art project called ‘Fish Out Of Water.’ It launched Two Days More, a tourism publication for Southwest Montana. It is currently developing several other projects in Southwest Montana.
West Yellowstone Economic Development Inc.
Since the Summer of 2006, the West Yellowstone Economic Development Council (WYED), a 501 C 3 non-profit organization, has been creating solutions to develop a healthy, vibrant, and progressive local economy in West Yellowstone and the Greater Yellowstone Basin. By working with others, WYED is the organization by which great things can be accomplished. It has been collaborating with the MCEDC since 2008.
In response to a lack of funding for marketing, WYED lead an effort to establish a Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID) for the Town of West Yellowstone. Launched on May 1, 2009, this was just the second TBID created in the State of Montana. Many other towns and cities have since followed our lead. The TBID could raise up to $250,000 or more annually in new funds to market the region. In August 2009, WYED completed Buffalo Roam, a three-year public art project. The final day of the project, an incredibly successfully auction attended by hundreds of art lovers, raised over $160,000 for community projects. These are just two examples of the work WYED has already completed in West Yellowstone. It is currently developing an education project for West Yellowstone and for the more than 200 scientists who work within Yellowstone National Park.
