Forgotten Veterans Project
This year 10 percent of the gross revenues from the Madison Marathon race entry fees will be gifted to the Forgotten Veterans Project. This is a project based in Ennis that recognizes veterans who have honorably served, already passed away, but have no family members or anyone else who has recognized them for their service to our country.
There are Veterans Memorials all across America, including an exceptionally beautiful memorial in Ennis. The individual memorials at these sites (whether they are bricks, flags, photos, testimonials, or some other tangible memorial) are usually created by the surviving family members of the veteran. But what happens if the veteran has no family? Who takes care of the grave? Who purchases a brick or a memorial in their name at a Veterans Memorial? Who proudly says to the world that this person was a member of our armed forces? Sadly, in many cases, the answer is nobody does because nobody knows that the person was a veteran.
Andy Debona, a US Marine Corp Veteran and the caretaker of the Veterans Memorial in Ennis, established the Forgotten Veterans Project a few years ago. The MCEDC was proud to select this project as a beneficiary of the Fish Out Of Water project which was a community art fund raiser for community projects in Madison County in 2009. It is once again proud to select this project as the beneficiary for the 3rd annual Madison Marathon.
If you intend to run in this year’s 3rd annual Madison Marathon, please consider yourself a stakeholder in this very worthy project. Tell your friends and if you wish to make a direct donation to this wonderful project please send us an email. We’ll put you in touch with the right people.
Thank You
Sam Korsmoe, Race Director
